'Mask' Storyboard & Shot Descriptions

Week 7 Vlog

A quick re-cap of progression in week 7 of work regarding to the build-up of our 2 minute opening to a thriller film.

Storyboard Animatic

This is our storyboard animatic that I (David) compiled by taking pictures that convey various camera shots and angles that will be used for various shots when we go out and shoot our film. I also used final cut in sequencing the images together. After Toby also added foley sounds and background suspenseful ambient music that is very iconic of a thriller into the animatic. This task has given us a better overview of how our film opening is shaping up, and now by doing this any improvements can be added to furthermore before we go out and shoot our film.

Here is a screenshot of me working on the animatic.

These are all the props that will be used when shooting the opening to our thriller film 'Mask'. By this list being compiled we will know all the correct props to use and therefore this will convey mis-en-scene that is realistic and believable.

Preliminary Task Storyboard

This is our preliminary task storyboard that we created, this helped give us an overview of how the task will look and also assisted in allowing us to film the task quicker; this is as we knew all the correct camera shots and angles we would use.

Group Film Pitch 'Mask'

This is our group film pitch for a 2 minute thriller opening that we plan to create, all of us combined ideas and came up with a small presentation giving a brief overview of how our film opening will look.

I decided to take pictures of one of our actors to show that the group is communicating with the actors about the film. It also shows that we are ensuring that the actors know what they will be doing on the day we film.

Weather Check

This is the weather for London in early January. Upon seeing the weather the group has decided to film on the 4th as no rain is expected, this would of hampered the filming process dramatically.
An added factor is that on the 5th the weather is also sunny so we can film on that day aswell.

Shot List (Story Order)

This is a shot list compiled by me in which I referred to the scene walk through to help guide me. Each shot type will also have an angle to accompany it, I believe this will really give our thriller film a professional cinematographic look and all shot types as well as angles were decided based on a characters position within each action they did, (for example, a high angle shot on conspiracist whilst he is being pursued by agent 1 to show his powerlessness).

1. Medium angle close-up of conspiracy website with headline - 'Government’s Assassination plot'.

Reece (Photos)

Here are various location photos that we are planning to use in our opening to a thriller film ('The Mask') and how they will be used as shots in order to show and communicate certain things to the audience.
This is probably going to be one of the first shots in our film, to establish location. Being realistic we are unlikely to be able to film inside the station, so by having a shot of the stations name, this will be easier to show location.

Charing Cross station will be our back up location in-case we cannot us Westminster station.
The London Eye would also signify the change of location in the film and show that the scene is being set around this area.

A shot of the MI5 building will be used if we cannot shoot by the London Eye and Big Ben.
This will be our first choice alleyway to shoot in, located at East Hill, Dartford. When I visited here it was quiet and I believe it is sufficient to shoot our alleyway scene in.
A shot of big ben would be an establishing shot to show the change of location as well as setting the scene.
For the alleyway scene this was the first choice, but when I visited this alleyway it was quite busy and loud, in contrast the alleyway scene we are to shoot will only involve two of our characters and needs to be quiet for clear dialogue. So now this is our backup location for incase we cannot shoot at the other alleyway.
Thames House will be a backup location if we cannot secure Westminster to shoot at.

Test Shots (Actors)

Me (David) and Toby have done the test shots for our actors, Toby cast the young journalist and conspiracist and I (David) have cast the agent.

Costume Design

The costume design is a very important choice in knowing the uniforms each character will wear, and by accurately deciding the costumes each character is to wear allows our film to be more realistic and believable though mis-en-scene. For example if we were to have an agent in pyjamas, the film will not be as believable as if the agent were to be in a suit.

This is our audience expectations of a thriller vox pop. We have decided to ask men aged 18 - 30 on their opinions regarding expectations from a thriller, this is because this age range is also our target audience so all their feedback is relevant in shaping how we are going to create our 2 minute opening to a thriller film.

Possible Location Shots For Our Thriller Film

After a recent trip to London I felt it would be good to get some location photos that we could possibly use for our thriller film. THESE ARE NOT THE FINAL LOCATIONS WE HAVE DECIDED TO USE. I will discuss with the rest of the group regarding feedback on the photos and if they make a suitable location for our thriller film. The location shots look expensive and are part of the adult world, which are very iconic of a thriller.
